King Charles and famous cricket players from around the world have been invited to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first Test match in Melbourne, officials said on Thursday. Tickets are already selling fast, even a year before the event.Australia will play England under lights at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from March 11-15, 2027 to mark this historic milestone. The celebration honours the very first Test match between these two teams, which was also played at the MCG in 1877. Players from the 1977 Centenary Test are expected to attend. Queen Elizabeth II was at that game, and officials hope King Charles will visit in 2027.“We’ve extended an invitation through all the appropriate channels, both government here and in the UK, for the King or a representative to be here,” Cricket Australia chief Todd Greenberg told the Sydney Morning Herald. “It’s certainly high on our list.”Cricket Australia has confirmed that an invitation has been issued.“We might arrange his visit slightly earlier in the Test match, as modern-day Tests may not last the full five days,” “We’ll ensure a royal presence for the opening ball on day one.” added Greenberg.
