Guwahati: IMD has issued yellow and orange alerts for several districts of Assam for the next four days. On Saturday, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority advised people in Guwahati to remain cautious after heavy storms hit several parts of the state yet again.Earlier this week, Guwahati witnessed severe artificial flooding after record-breaking Apr rainfall.IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall across the northeast over the next four days. Assam remains a major concern after intense rain and destructive storms over the past week caused several deaths. For Sunday, IMD warned that thunderstorms and lightning, with gusty winds reaching up to 50-60 kmph, are very likely at isolated places in Assam. The Met office also said heavy rain is very likely at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Manipur on Sunday.Dark clouds covered many parts of the state on Saturday morning, followed by heavy rain and storms. Several large trees were uprooted and houses were damaged in Gohpur in northern Assam’s Biswanath district. Similar damage was reported at Rupohi in Nagaon district, where strong winds blew away tin roofs. In Darrang, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Majuli and Tinsukia districts, trees were uprooted and they fell on power lines, causing disruptions in many areas.Among Assam’s districts that recorded excess to large excess rainfall over the past week, Kamrup (Metro), under which comes the Guwahati city, saw the highest rainfall.
