Elon Musk recently announced a new AI venture – Macrohard, a play off the name Microsoft. Sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk said that Macrohard will purely be an “AI software company” under xAI. Stating that Marcohard is “a tongue-in-cheek name”, the project is very real. “Join @xAI and help build a purely AI software company called Macrohard. It’s a tongue-in-cheek name, but the project is very real!”, the tech billionaire wrote in the post. “In principle, given that software companies like Microsoft do not themselves manufacture any physical hardware, it should be possible to simulate them entirely with AI,” he added. However, Musk didn’t provide more details about the project. Notably, this is not the first time that Elon Musk has mentioned the term Macrohard. He first mentioned the name in October 2021 when he wrote “Macrohard >> Microsoft”. Internet personality and X user Chris Bakke @ChrisJBakke shared a screenshot of the latest and old tweets of Musk with a caption “Sometimes you have to sit on an idea for a few years.”Elon Musk responded to Bakke with a “Face with tears of joy” emoji.
When Elon Musk used the term ‘Macrohard’ to take a dig at Microsoft
As mentioned above, Elon Musk first mentioned the term Macrohard in 2021. He shared the troll tweet “Macrohard >> Microsoft” on October 25, 2021 – the day marking 20th anniversary of Microsoft Windows XP. In a consequent post, he praised the company’s video conferencing platform saying “Although Teams is pretty good”. In 2024, when Microsoft faced a worldwide outage due to a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error, Musk revisited this tweet. He then reshared the 2021 post with no words and simple three-dots.
