The love story of Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu has been written with golden letters, exemplifying ‘What’s meant to be, will be’ despite the tragic past and broken hearts. As the actress was mesmerized by the “Tragedy King” since she was 12, there have been instances where she remembers nothing but him. Celebrating the 81st birthday of Saira Banu, here’s a closer look at when she opened up about being fascinated by Kumar on the sets of ‘Mughal-E-Azam’ to the extent that she doesn’t remember his co-star, Madhubala.
Saira Banu recalls meeting Dilip Kumar
The late proficient actor Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu recited their wedding vows in 1966, when he was 44 and she was 22. While she grew up in London, the ‘Junglee’ actress often visited Mumbai during the summer break. On such an occasion, Banu’s family and friends decided to visit the sets of ‘Mughal-E-Azam.’ The ‘Devdas’ actor had such an impression imprinted on her that she couldn’t even remember looking at the stunning actress, Madhubala, who was present on the sets. At the time, the co-stars had broken up, and a couple of years later, Kumar and Banu got married, according to the Indian Express.
Saira Banu didn’t remember the ever-gorgeous Madhubala
“I think Mughal-e-Azam must have been winding up at that time with the Sheesh Mahal set. And I saw him there, and I don’t remember a thing about the Sheesh Mahal,” she said in the interview, before adding, “I don’t remember a thing about the gorgeous, beautiful Madhubala as Anarkali.”
Dilip Kumar was respectful towards the family…
Recalling the interaction between Kumar (born Muhammad Yusuf Khan) and her family, she said that the late actor was respectful towards them. “I just remember looking at Yusuf saab, standing there in a white shirt and pants. He had folded his arms, and he called my mother Aapaji. He was ever so respectful of Aapaji and ever so fond of my family,” she said.
